Wine tastings are a great way to get together with friends and discuss wine. We are actually looking forward to January this year since it will be our first wine tasting club meeting. If you are hosting a wine party, try to use a theme to educate your guests on the many types of wine. Here are some ideas for your next wine tasting:
Horizontal Tasting: Same year of a single wine varietal from multiple producers (ie. 2012 Merlot from three different producers)
Vertical Wine Tasting: One wine varietal from the same producer from several vintages (years)
Blind Tasting: Hide the identities of the wine in order to truly produce an unbiased rating for each wine
Big Eight Wine Tasting: Compare the world's eight most popular wines
Priceless Wine Tasting: Keep the prices hidden
Old World vs. New World: Compare the same varietal from the old world (Europe) to the New World (practically anywhere else)
ie. German Riesling vs. California Riesling
Tip: A burlap wrap around the label with a number or letter on it makes for a much prettier display than simply putting the wine in a paper bag to hide the identity. Use this for a priceless wine tasting or blind tastings.
We'd love to hear any wine tasting themes you have tried or any suggestions you may have for us to try. Sound off in the comments!
